Surgery Update & a Breakthrough!

Yesterday was my eye surgery. We (me, Anand, and my parents) arrived at the surgery center and they prepped me. The surgeon came in to talk to me before surgery and I asked him 2 very important questions:

1. When can I wear my contacts again? (2 weeks)
2. When can I wear eyeliner & mascara? (2 weeks)

LOL!

When I woke up in recovery, he came in and told me that unfortunately, he had to do more extensive surgery because my ducts were completely blocked. He had to place a permanent glass tube. He was hoping he could place a temporary stent, but with a complete blockage that would not have worked. Prior to the surgery, I was concerned about nausea & vomiting from the general anesthesia since the last two times I've had it I have been very sick after, even with precautions. The nurse asked the surgeon if he could put me under twilight anesthesia, but he said no-the work he had to do required general. The anesthesiologist was very nice and told me she would try several methods to prevent it-pre Meds, a sticker behind my ear, and some infusion through my IV. Well, I am happy to report that I had zero nausea & vomiting! After recovering for a while, I was ready to go home and crawl into my bed! We got home and Anand took care of me. He went to pick up the girls, and they were very happy to see me but worried about my eye-it looks kinda scary.

So, I am doing great so far-not much pain, my eye isn't bruised much, and not much swelling.here are pictures from surgery day:

And from this morning:

My instructions include:
Cold packs on my eye
Eye drops four times a day
Eye cream on incision three times a day
No lifting for two weeks
Pain medication as needed

So, about that breakthrough:

I have had a lot of surgeries. Every time, I always crave comfort (ie: unhealthy) foods after. I also always want an unhealthy meal immediately after surgery. Well, yesterday when I woke up, Anand asked if I wanted something to drink. I wanted something fizzy, but told I'm I wanted to stay away from diet coke because I haven't been drinking that. So I had a ginger ale. On the way home, he asked if there was anything I wanted since I hadn't eaten since the night before. I didn't. He said I should eat something before taking pain medication, so I had him toast a whole wheat English muffin with a bit of butter. I ate half and that was all I wanted. I still figured that evening I would want something not-so-healthy. For some reason, I didn't. I actually craved vegetables! Anand asked what I wanted for dinner and I requested a stir fry with lots of veggies. He sliced up a cucumber for me and I ate the stir fry along with about half of a grilled chicken breast. I had prepped lots of healthy foods before my surgery so I think that definitely helped. But, the real breakthrough for me is that since I spent the past two months eating healthy foods and exercising daily I am feeling great. I just want to continue eating healthy foods and taking care of my body. I want to heal and continue feeling well.

This morning I had a slice of the healthy and full of veggies frittata along with fresh berries. I'm feeling good!

So there is my day one recap!

  1. You are an inspiration! You actually preferred healthy food over comfort food. I hope to get to that place soon! May your recovery be speedy, and your eyes be sporting contact lenses, eyeliner and mascara! (Not that you need the makeup to look beautiful but that you enjoy it!):o) Jill
